What would be the ideal hackathon? See the results of our survey

  • The people surveyed like hackathons because they fundamentally learn, meet people and have fun. Also secondarily because they solve challenges and because there are prizes.
  • Although the prize is not what motivates the people surveyed the most to participate in a hackathon, it does seem to be a great incentive.
  • The people surveyed prefer physical prizes over cash prizes.
  • The people surveyed think that at least the first 3 teams should get some prize.
  • The people surveyed think that a prize of €100 or €200 per participant is not bad.
  • The people surveyed believe that the most important thing when choosing the winner of a hackathon should be the originality of the idea, although the feasibility of the project, the technical difficulty, the degree of completion, and the design and usability of the application are also important.
  • The people surveyed clearly prefer hackathons with multidisciplinary teams.
  • The people surveyed like that there are talks only if they are short and at the beginning of the hackathon.
  • The people surveyed prefer to eat varied catering at a hackathon.
  • The people surveyed think that the ideal duration of a hackathon is between one and two days.
  • The people surveyed prefer that hackathons are organized on the weekend.
  • The people surveyed would be willing to pay at least €10 to participate in a hackathon.

Ethical Code

As a community, we adhere to a series of principles that we consider to be its foundational values. They have been agreed upon and debated by the organizers, and we have compiled them in the following ethical code:

  • We use, promote and defend Free Software, both from a technological and ethical point of view.
  • We feel identified with the hacker ethics, defined as the attitude of any person who, armed with curiosity, is dedicated to learning about something, looking for ways to improve it and who considers that putting information within reach of everyone constitutes an extraordinary good.
  • As developers, we believe that we have the freedom and the right to choose with what license of use we release what we create. It is why, in the events that we organize or in those in which we participate, we demand as a requirement that the decision on the license of use of what is developed falls solely on its creators, who will decide what is done with the code.
  • We consider that a hackathon cannot be considered a way of obtaining custom software by sponsors or third parties.
  • Likewise, although a hackathon is an event where networking can be done, and this can end with some agreement between several parties, it should not be used solely and exclusively for recruiting purposes.
  • Any type of behavior that prevents free participation or that affects personally any member of the community will not be tolerated. Behaviors that discriminate will not be tolerated for reasons of origin, race, gender identity or sexual preferences, political opinions, religious beliefs or the absence of them, or any other factor considered to be personal.
  • We reserve the right to cancel our participation in any event if we consider that any of these points is being violated.
